Personally, the worldly me can easily get swept up in the romantic notion soulmates, however, my crotchety old soul gets all fired up. It shouts out of me like the old lady in the Geico commercial. “That’s now how this works! It’s now any of this works!”
Yes, there is me who tries to navigate this often material and superficial world and my soul (my higher wisdom) who attempts to guide me on the right path. Often failing, as I am not a good student. However, when it comes to soulmates I have come to learn they are hardly the Hollywood romance version of forever love with the one and only. That’s the soulmate made of fairytales.
What came to mind this morning, is how many people out there who are flaunting soulmates actually uncovered the depths of their own soul. Seriously, if one isn’t in touch with their own soul, how can they assess the one they consider a soulmate to be true when so often the romantic notion of soulmate is mistaken for, well, physical attraction.
There are many people in the world we my find common bonds and may have deep attraction. This is what many assume to be a soulmate but the sense is goes a lot deeper. It goes beyond interests and physical attraction. In fact, soul mates aren’t physically attracted, they are attracted by the soul and if we are living a superficial life with most of our cares being of a material nature, how can we be sure of any soul connection, when the first soul we need to connect with is our own?
To find one’s soulmate, soul sisters, bothers and our whole tribe, it starts with soul searching. Do we have a relationship with our own soul? Have we felt it? Have we embraced it? Has it spoken to us in a soft, unconscious manner which yields our path forward? It is only then, when we cross certain people in our lives, do we not just see them, we feel them.
Soulmates aren’t seen by their physical appearance. They are felt by their energy and they could be anything from a family member, a friend, a coworker, teacher, or even a pet. They may even be people we’re not attracted to and possibly even dislike, yet there is something about them that speaks to our enlightenment. There is something about that person we need to learn in order to grow.
Our mundane thinking mind can’t determine who is and who isn’t a soulmate. Our soul’s awareness is not a conscious one but rather subconscious because it speaks all of our lifetimes, in which we have no real clue. Sure, some of us may have meandered in the path of discovering our past lives, but learning the lessons of the soul require our deep dive into our own soul, not in others.
When we are preoccupied with the material world – our appearance, our career and money – we lose sight of the soul because although none of these things are bad, they speak to our superficial nature. They are all meaningless in regards to the soul.
Now, if we were to meditate on our relationship with our appearance, our careers and money, then that is a step to understanding our soul. Why are we so attached to our bodies, our appearance and career? What does it mean to us? What do we feel we are lacking or need? What needs to be expressed that we are suppressing. Once we come to some terms with our relationship with the material world, our soul starts speaking to us at another level.
The people who come in and out of lives, our so-called soulmates are those simply meant to guide us through this journey of life. Nothing more, nothing less. They could be a life-long partner, or someone we pass on freeway. It can be that fleeting. And since many of us have been through this journey of life many times before, we have a multitude of soulmate of all kinds.
